“Rooted in Joy: A Gathering at the Patuxent River,” held on Sunday, August 10, 2025. We were honored to partner with Akwatribe Kayaking Adventure, who provided a safety orientation and guided participants on the river by kayak and canoe. Participants who RSVP’d after July 14 were able to rent kayaks on-site from Akwatribe for $35 per hour.
Hosted at Spice Creek Farm and the Patuxent Riverkeeper’s Center, the gathering uplifted Black agrarian legacy and BIPOC land stewardship through shared meals, intergenerational storytelling, and time on the water. Founded in 2023, Akwatribe offered guided tours, skill clinics, and environmental education across the DMV, centering wellness, history, and stewardship. Patuxent Riverkeeper continued its work to protect and restore Maryland’s longest intrastate river.
